"The impact of this instrument borders on the fabulous, and it is likely, if it ever should be lost, that the tale of this instrument will be for the future what the history of Orpheus is for readers today."

Roellig

"The advantages of this instrument are that its tones are incomparably sweet beyond those of any other."

Benjamin Franklin

"The ear of a mortal can perceive in its plaintive tones the echoes of a divine harmony."

Chateaubriand

"There has never been an instrument more important for the future than the armonica...."

Roellig

While in London in 1757, Benjamin Franklin attended a concert where a musician played drinking glasses by passing a wet finger around the rim of the glasses. The glasses were different sizes and had different amounts of water. Franklin writes, "Being charmed with the sweetness of its tones, and the music he produced from it, I wished only to see the glasses disposed in a more convenient form." Franklin worked with a London glass blower to produce the glass bowls. In 1761, Benjamin Franklin invented the Glass Armonica.
